Those of us who are counting calories know that we shouldn’t be drinking away the majority of our daily intake. So just how many calories are hiding in our favourite wines?
Well, if proper wine glasses are used, then most come in under the 100 calorie mark. Here is a rundown of some popular wines and their caloric intake:
- White Zinfandel, Sauvignon blanc – 80 calories per four ounce serving
- Red Zinfandel, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon – 90 calories per four ounce serving
- Red Bordeaux, Merlot, Rose – 95 calories per four ounce serving
- Dry Champagne – 105 calories per four ounce serving
- Sangria – 110 calories per four ounce serving
- White Port – 140 calories per four ounce serving
As you can see, it’s possible to maintain a healthy lifestyle while still indulging with a glass of your favourite wine over dinner or during an evening out. Anyone who prefers another alcoholic beverages, like a gin and tonic, however, isn’t as lucky because they come in at 280 calories per serving. Those trendy mixed drinks? They are around 800 calories or more per serving!
Also, it’s called a “beer gut” for a reason. A 12 ounce bottle of beer can range anywhere from 140 to 200 calories. While light beer averages 100 calories per serving, it’s still not a wise choice when considering the cardiovascular benefits of a wine equivalent.
