Think of it as a time to share and experiment together.
According to a survey conducted by The Wine Market Council, 59% of people would love to receive wine on Valentine’s Day, while the remaining 41% would prefer a box of chocolates. Not sure which chocolates to pair with the batch of wine that you’ve created? Here are some of our suggestions:
White Chocolate
The mellow buttery flavours found in white chocolates make them an ideal candidate for Sherry.
Milk Chocolate
A light Merlot, Pinot Noir, Ruby Port, Riesling or even an Ice Wine will hold up well when paired with milk chocolate. Try a sparkling wine or champagne if you plan to serve milk chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Dark Chocolate
Known for their unparalleled tasting combination, Cabernets and Zinfandels are a perfect match for dark or bittersweet chocolates, while truffles are best accented with a Vintage Port. Consider Pinot Noir or Merlot to accompany dark chocolates with 55% cocoa.
A few important things to remember:
-
If you’re experimenting with an assorted box of chocolates, work from light to dark.
-
Your wine should at least be as sweet as the chocolate that you’re enjoying it with to avoid a bitter or sour taste.
-
Match lighter, elegant chocolates with lighter-bodied wines and more intensely flavoured chocolates with a full-bodied wine.
