Sauvignon Blanc |
Sauvignon Blanc (pronounced SO-vin-yawn BLONK) originated in the Bordeaux and Loire Valley regions of France. Its increasing popularity among white wine drinkers who are seeking an alternative to Chardonnay is responsible for this green-skinned grape now being planted in many of the world's wine regions. Most notably in Chile, New Zealand and California.
Budding late but ripening early means this grape will do well in sunny climates however if the heat gets to be too much the grapes will quickly over-ripen producing a dull acidic flavour. Regardless of the climate it's grown in Sauvignon Blanc's dry, crisp, acidic, herbaceous characteristics are usually evident. However when grown in a cooler climate it's grassy, herbaceous characteristics become more dominate and in warmer climates it's citrus and passion fruit aromas take over.
Due to its acidity Sauvignon Blanc should be served between 45 to 50 degrees to be enjoyed fully. It's also best to savour this wine when it's young because it won't benefit much from aging. Known as a very versatile wine in terms of what its served with Suavignon Blanc is also one of the few wines that can compliment sushi. |
