Site News: Newsletter Error Warning
Jan 13, 2010
It has come to our attention that some readers had an issue with the last issue of our newsletter, sent out Jan. 12, 2010. We have determined that the problem was caused by by some antivirus scanners wrongly identifying our newsletter as malicious. As part of our tracking software, each reader is redirected for a split second to a web site that keeps count of how many people are reading our newsletters. Normally, this process is invisible to the reader, and is quite common in practice. In our most recent issue, a technical error resulted in some scanners believing that we were trying to trick you into visiting a site you didn't want to visit. I want to assure you that this was not the case, and at no point were any computers in any danger.
I also want to assure you that our statistic gather methods are completely anonymous. At no point do we track anything but the number of persons who read our newsletter or follow a link from it. The information collected is simply a counter, and we cannot tell who reads anything. No software is contained in our newsletters, and no software is installed on your system at any point in the process.
Thank you for your understanding, and I apologize to any of our readers who were alarmed by the warnings. Again, at no point were our systems or yours in danger, and we are collecting no information from these newsletters except how many people are reading them. The method which caused the alarm has been corrected, and future newsletters should not provoke any warnings.
Thanks again,
The Wine Guys
